Skills Tests

You have to pass the professional skills tests in numeracy and literacy before you begin your teacher training. You can take the tests up to three times but you have to pay for any resits, so it’s important to make sure you’re fully prepared. Get Into Teaching, 2017

If you’ve done your research on applying to train to teach, you’ll know this is one of many essential elements of the application process to gain a place on a teacher training programme, whichever route you choose.

Most institutes require that you pass your skills test, within a month or two of receiving your offer, but many applicants take their tests as soon as they’ve submitted their application, making their application even stronger.

The professional skills tests (skills tests) for prospective teachers assess the core skills that teachers need to fulfil their professional role in schools, rather than the subject knowledge needed for teaching. This is to ensure all teachers are competent in numeracy and literacy, regardless of their specialism.
