Apart from stamina, patience, integrity, humour and commitment there are one or two criteria that you will need in order to train to teach:
Statutory requirements for entry into teaching.
- A good honours degree (usually 2:2 or above) in a related subject area, although this isn’t always a necessity
- GCSE Mathematics and English, grade C or above
- If you have significant experience in a related subject area and a degree in another discipline contact us and we will advise you
- You’ll also need to take the numeracy and literacy professional skills tests as part of the application process and have passed them both before the start of the course (see here for more information).
We also advise for all applicants to have some experience in the classroom, even if only a couple of days. This shows not only a basic understanding of life in the classroom setting, but also your commitment to your desire to teach.
We can support this by offering you school experience in our partner schools. If you are considering applying to the Shires and would like to spend between one and five days in our schools, please register your interest here: Register your Interest.
